What's better than having culinary herbs at your fingertips whenever you want to make a dish or try a new recipe. I don't know how many times I wanted to make a particular dish, but forgot that I needed this herb or that herb. And you only need one leaf or 1-2 sprigs, but you have to buy a whole pack of herbs, or you need a bunch of leaves, but the grocery store only sells little flat packs for $3.00 a piece . Well, that never has to happen again. Here are my top three reasons, for why you should consider growing your own herbs.
It Saves You Money
I purchased some herbs during my bi-weekly shopping hall, only to find that they spoiled before the end of the week before I could use them. Of course they
spoiled. Those herbs could have been picked, packaged and refrigerated the week before or longer, and once placed out on the selling floor, it's going to start spoiling even faster. I hate losing money like that, and It's happened more times than I'd like to mention.
Easy Access
The herbs are always readily available for you to use whenever you need them. Never having to change dinner plans again because you don't have specific herbs. You just walk outside and snip off whatever you need, or snip from the window sill if indoors. I can make dinner out of anything I have on hand, and not having to worry about if I have any herbs left, or if the herbs are still good. They're always good because they are alive and attached to the plant.
Easy to Grow.
In my opinion I think growing herbs is great for beginners. They're easy to grow with minimal effort. You can grow them from seed, or from a starter plant from your local nursery. They don't take up much space, and they will thrive as long as they get plenty of sun and proper watering. And you can grow them year round. I have a winter season, so I keep my herbs indoors and make sure they are in front of the sunniest window.
